How Much Can a Ram 2500 Tow?

blake_fulenwider_snyder_ram_2500_towing_capacity_2026

A properly equipped 2026 Ram 2500 tows up to 20,000 pounds. With the gas V8 the maximum is 17,840 pounds, and maximum payload is 3,930 pounds. Your actual rating depends on cab, bed, drivetrain, axle ratio and hitch type — the number on your door jamb and trailer hitch label is the one that counts.

2026 Ram 2500 towing and payload, by the numbers

Rating2026 Ram 2500
Maximum towing, gasUp to 17,840 lbs
Maximum towing, properly equippedUp to 20,000 lbs
Maximum payloadUp to 3,930 lbs
TransmissionTorqueFlite HD 8-speed automatic
Cab configurationsRegular Cab, Crew Cab, Mega Cab
Bed lengths6'4" or 8' (66.4" between the wheel wells)
Starting MSRP$46,855

Those are ceiling numbers. A Crew Cab 4x4 with a heavy option list weighs more than a Regular Cab 4x2, and every pound of truck comes out of what you can pull. Treat the published maximum as the best case for one specific build, not a promise about the truck in your driveway.

Gas or Cummins? What actually changes your tow rating

The single biggest lever on a Ram 2500's tow rating is the engine. The 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel makes 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque, and it's what gets a 2500 to the 20,000-pound end of the range. The gas V8 tops out at 17,840 pounds.

Torque is the part that matters when you're pulling a gooseneck out of a caliche pit or climbing out of the Colorado River breaks on US-84. Diesel also changes how the truck behaves on a long grade with 14,000 pounds behind it — you hold speed instead of hunting for gears.

Whether it's worth the money depends on how you use the truck. If you tow a stock trailer or a 30-foot gooseneck most weeks, the Cummins pays for itself in drivability and resale. If you tow a bass boat to Lake J.B. Thomas twice a month and haul a toolbox the rest of the time, the gas 2500 is a lot of truck for less money. About 38% of the new trucks on our lot are diesels, so we can put you in either one and let you drive both back to back.

Conventional, gooseneck and fifth-wheel towing are different ratings

A Ram 2500's highest tow numbers come from gooseneck and fifth-wheel setups, because the load sits over the rear axle instead of hanging off the back bumper. Conventional bumper-pull ratings are lower.

  • Conventional (bumper pull): receiver hitch, weight-distributing hitch for heavier loads. Cattle trailers, equipment trailers, travel trailers.
  • Gooseneck: ball in the bed, over the rear axle. The standard around here for stock and flatbed trailers.
  • Fifth wheel: a plate in the bed. Most common on big travel trailers.

If you're ordering a truck to tow a gooseneck, get the factory prep package. Retrofitting is doable, but a factory setup is cleaner and keeps the ratings straightforward.

Towing capacity and payload are not the same number

This trips up more buyers than anything else. Towing capacity is what you can pull. Payload is what the truck itself can carry — people, fuel, tools, and the tongue or pin weight of the trailer.

A gooseneck typically puts 20–25% of its loaded weight down on the ball. Hook a 16,000-pound trailer to a 2500 and you've just put roughly 3,200–4,000 pounds into the bed before anyone climbs in. That's payload, not towing, and it's usually the number that runs out first. It's also the main reason people step up to a Ram 3500.

How to find your truck's exact rating

  1. Open the driver's door and read the tire and loading label for GVWR and payload.
  2. Find the trailer weight rating sticker (commonly on the door jamb or in the glove box) for your specific build.
  3. Weigh the truck loaded the way you actually drive it, then subtract from GVWR to get real payload.
  4. Add up trailer weight plus everything in it — livestock, water, fuel, feed. Wet weight, not dry.

Bring your trailer by the store and we'll do the math with you. No appointment, no credit pull.

What this means on West Texas roads

Out here a tow rating isn't a spec-sheet argument. It's whether the truck can pull a loaded stock trailer from a pasture north of Hermleigh to the Scurry County Coliseum, or move a skid steer between lease roads without cooking the brakes on the way back down to I-20. Heat, wind out of the southwest, and long distances between anything are the real test — Big Spring is 62 miles, Lubbock 85, San Angelo 99.

That's the reason we stock the way we do. Two of every three new trucks on our lot is a Ram, and heavy duty is the biggest piece of it.

Related FAQs

How much can a 2026 Ram 2500 tow?

A properly equipped 2026 Ram 2500 tows up to 20,000 pounds. With the gas V8, maximum towing is 17,840 pounds. The exact rating depends on cab style, bed length, drivetrain, axle ratio and whether you're pulling conventional, gooseneck or fifth wheel.

What is the difference between a Ram 2500 and a Ram 3500?

Both are heavy duty trucks, but the 3500 has a higher payload ceiling — up to 7,590 pounds versus 3,930 on the 2500 — and can be ordered with dual rear wheels. If your gooseneck pin weight is pushing the 2500's payload, the 3500 is the answer. For most bumper-pull towing, a 2500 is plenty of truck.

Do I need a diesel to tow with a Ram 2500?

No. The gas V8 still tows up to 17,840 pounds, which covers most livestock trailers and travel trailers. The 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel — 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque — is worth it if you tow heavy loads often, tow long distances, or want the easier drive on grades.

What is the payload capacity of a Ram 2500?

Up to 3,930 pounds when properly equipped. Payload covers passengers, fuel, cargo and the tongue or pin weight of your trailer. Because a gooseneck puts roughly 20–25% of its loaded weight into the bed, payload — not tow rating — is often the limit you hit first.

Does the Ram 2500 come with a powertrain warranty?

Yes. Every 2026 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 comes with a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Ask us for the full coverage terms and what's included on the specific truck you're looking at.
